A conversation with Swapna Srinivasan, a dynamic front-end engineer working with cutting-edge technology in the sphere of information, with experience in agile projects and test-driven development frameworks. This includes expertise in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript , Objective-C, AngularJS, Angular18, and React. It's a pleasure to learn not only more about the field but also about working with relevant fields of data prevalent today!

Q1. - If you could describe exactly what it is you do in a few sentences, what would those say?

'I am a frontend Engineer working for a multinational company that specializes in food processing machinery.

I develop software applications that can work with the machinery to track the food that’s being processed'.

Q2.- How did you start your career in frontend development and what prompted you to venture into that specific field of technology?

'I started my career as a mobile app developer specialising in iOS and also in Xamarin (for cross platform applications).

Then I moved on to web development. JavaScript based frameworks excited me'.

Q3.- Since UX or user experience is an integral part of the framework of FE, how would you say you individually approach it on a small-scale?

'Mastering frontend development frameworks is important. Most of the frontend frameworks are JavaScript or typescript based. And understanding the basics of how javascript/typescript works and having a good hand over data structures is the heart of frontend development according to me.

Also, getting rid of the 'developer' mindset and looking at the apps from an end user perspective helps'.

Q4.- How do you think it is 1. sustainable and 2. accurate to be technically sound with the constantly evolving tech landscape and what resources would you say are most vital/accessible?

'Today we have vast amounts of free resources including AI which assist developers to type out code.

As the tech landscape keeps changing, Whichever technology we specialize in, having a thorough understanding of the basics takes us a long way. My go-to are YouTube tutorials.

To sustain in a longer term, what’s important is to know which design patterns to use in the software architecture. These key decision-making skills around software design patterns make or break products.'

Q5.- If there is a piece of advice or a notion, you'd like to dispel about venturing into the field of technology, specifically what it is you do for high-school students, what would you like to say?

'IT has boom and recession cycles. But nothing can steal your abilities and learning. So whatever technology you want to specialize in, give it your 100%. You can be a jack of many technologies. But it’s important to be a master of At least 1 or 2.'

Q6.- How important are softer skills pertaining to communication in frontend development?

'Frontend engineers must communicate on a daily basis with business analysts, scrum masters, product owners, project managers and sometimes even end users. So, it’s highly important to be a team player and communicate clearly in both speech and writing.'

Q7.- And finally, how would you say you can begin honing your skills on a daily basis in order to efficiently optimize your engineering and technically inclined work?

Learning is permanent and it’s important to keep up with latest developments in the specific technologies that one specializes in especially after the advent of AI.

Basics of coding should be revisited whenever necessary. Sometimes, solving Leet code problems help in improving one’s analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Last but not the least, aspiring developers must get rid of the 'execute instructions' mindset and ask questions and have a 'create a product' mindset.
